A journey into the youth of the actress Yüksel Esen. With a moving solo evening, she tells of becoming a woman and being a woman against the background of her overlapping cultures of origin. In tragicomic passages she describes the discovery of her gender, disarming the absurdity of the rules and norms that Swiss-Turkish culture constantly tries to teach her. With her autobiographical performance, Yüksel Esen finds profound, self-empowering and always humorous tones to confront the impositions of life.
The play depicts and deals with sexualised violence,
domestic violence and racism.
UND DANN WAR ICH NICHT MEHR
Yüksel Esen was awarded the newcomer prize Jungsegler 2023 for her solo.
She is touring with her piece through the German part of Switzerland this season from November to May.
The jury's feedback:
"Yüksel Esen inspires with a captivating autobiographical performance. Sensual, humorous and differentiated, she tells of her origins and her departure as a young woman. In her first solo evening "Und dann war ich nicht mehr" the Basel actress switches with ease between reflection and parody, dance and direct dialogue with her audience. The energy and honesty with which she exposes herself to many contradictions surprises and touches."
